Course details
What will you learn on the course?
Hosted by professional signwriter and industry expert Joby Carter, you’ll have an introduction to the essential techniques including handling a paint brush, brushwork techniques, using a mahl, and visualising and layout without a computer. Joby is a renowned expert in this field having learned from master craftsmen himself and having transformed vintage rides and attractions for Carters Steam Fair across 4 decades. Whilst he can’t teach you to signwrite in a day, through a mixture of demonstrations and one to one feedback he will ensure that you leave with your own piece of artwork that you have drawn and painted and the confidence to progress in this field if you are interested in learning more.
Who is this course for?
This course is ideal for someone that would like to see if they have what it takes to consider a career as a traditional signwriter and would like to try their skills before committing to further study and professional development. It’s also ideal for those working in the creative industries who have an interest in letterform and typography who miss being ‘hands-on’ with design and want to reconnect and refresh their traditional creative skills.
Where is the course?
The course is held in the workshop at the Carters Steam Fair yard at White Waltham in Maidenhead which is a live working yard – you’ll be able to see the current signwriting and fairground art projects that are being worked on by Joby and the team. Throughout the day you’ll have access to lots of paint and materials that you’ll need, and lunch will be provided. We encourage you to forget about modern computers, roll up your sleeves and get painty.
